Find out how are we working with our suppliers to deliver our customers products that are not only great for their dogs, but also have as little impact on the environment as possible.
There’s no doubt that we need to be more mindful when it comes to the impact we’re having on our environment, and our biggest issue in the past has been the amount of plastic we distribute through our packaging. Most brands of dog food traditionally come packed in a type of plastic called PET, but not all local councils are able to recycle this and so the bags inevitably end up in landfill. We’re not happy with this, which is why we’ve broken from tradition and are using a new type of compostable packaging that can be disposed of responsibly.
What is Compostable packaging?
The material used is an industrial-grade brown paper bag with a starch lining. It is strong enough to hold the kibble inside, and will degrade in your compost heap after 6 months at 50 degrees Celsius. This means that even if the bags do end up in landfill, they will slowly decompose without any processing.
Which recipes are packed in Compostable bags?
As of 1st February 2020, all recipes of our Grain Free Kibble will be manufactured in compostable packaging*. We’re also purchasing a selection of our treats in bulk and packing them ourselves in compostable bags. You’ll know that a product comes in compostable packaging wherever you see this symbol .
What else are we doing?
We do our best to recycle and reuse wherever possible. We purchase used boxes to send orders away from our store, and many of the packing materials are reused from orders we ourselves have received.
Deliveries within a certain radius of our store are delivered by our own van, and are grouped wherever possible to avoid short, inefficient journeys. This makes our delivery times a bit longer, but reduces the amount of fuel we are using and in effect, the amount of greenhouse gases we are pumping into the atmosphere.
*please note we will be using up our existing stocks of plastic bags to avoid any unnecessary wastage.
